nell'ultima parte della sua carriera tiziano ha continuato a prestare molta attenzione ai ritratti , anche se dipingendo meno . il più sgargiante è il ritratto di un uomo in costume militare databile ai primi tempi 1550s . È ritratto così teatralmente che è difficile prenderlo sul serio . Tiziano ha adottato solo il full-length formato per clienti di altissimo livello e sorprendentemente in un'immagine così spavalda che il sitter è sfuggito all'identificazione . Il suo abbigliamento deve anche essere meglio compreso poiché sembra a metà strada tra un costume militare e un costume da caccia . L'identità del soggetto di questo life-size la pittura è sconosciuta , probabilmente rappresenta ferrante gonzaga ( 1507-1557 ) , comandante di successo sotto carlo v e poi viceré di sicilia e governatore di milano . il cupido armeggiare con il suo elmo magnificamente decorato mette il ritratto in un allegorical-mythical contesto .
